About Program
The Department of Mathematics offers two undergraduate programs in Mathematics, namely, Bachelor of Science (BSc) Mathematics – a three-year program, and BSc (Hons)/ BSc (Hons) with Research – a four-year program.
Mathematics is all about solving complex problems and developing new theories and concepts. Keeping this notion of Mathematics, the programs are designed to provide a solid foundation in Mathematics and its applications. Some of the salient features of the program include:
-
Rigorous Curriculum: The curriculum is designed to provide a strong foundation in mathematical theory, computational techniques, and applications of mathematical concepts to address real-world problems. Special emphasis is given to the problem-solving approach where students learn how to think critically, analyse data, formulate, and solve problems emerging from cutting-edge research areas using a systematic approach. In the course curriculum, students get sufficient exposure to certain advanced topics in mathematics such as multivariate calculus, abstract algebra, differential geometry, cosmology, scientific computing, transforms, time-series analysis, demography and many more which gives them an edge over others.
-
Interdisciplinary Approach: Mathematics offers interesting overlaps with other disciplines such as physics, environmental sciences, engineering, computer science, and economics. The program offers the opportunity to explore these interdisciplinary connections and develop skills in related fields. In addition to a BSc degree in mathematics, a student can also earn a minor degree in physics, chemistry, statistics, IT, and economics as per his interest and background.
-
Flexibility in Course Selection: Apart from getting a minor in a chosen subject. The course structure also allows a student to choose elective courses leading to a specialized track such as econometrics, machine learning, data analysis, mathematical modelling and many more in his final year.
-
Research Opportunities: A student pursuing BSc (Hons) with research has opportunities to engage himself in research activities and work on goal-oriented research projects under the supervision of experienced faculty members. This will enable the student to develop skill sets which are essential to pursue a successful research career. After successful completion of BSc (Hons) with research program, the student will be eligible to directly enrol on a PhD program.
-
Student-Centric Approach: We understand that every student has unique abilities and learning needs which may require a flexible learning environment for a personalized learning experience. We aim to provide students with a broad-based education that includes both academic and vocational skills. Apart from traditional classroom teaching students are encouraged to learn from hands-on experiential learning. A dedicated Career Development Cell is there which prepares the students to appear in various competitive exams.
-
. Career Opportunities: A Bachelor's degree in Mathematics can open doors to a wide range of career opportunities in various fields which include data analysis, actuarial science, finance, operations research, cryptography, network security, and software development.
A Bachelor's degree in Mathematics is an excellent choice for students who have a passion for Mathematics and want to unfold the mysteries of the real-world using mathematical tools. The program offers a strong foundation in mathematics, advanced-level coursework, research opportunities, and preparation for being a successful professional in education, research and different industries.
